For many of our guests, a holiday isn’t complete without bringing the family dog along. South Devon is one of the UK’s best destinations for dog-friendly breaks, with miles of coast path, countryside trails, and sandy beaches where four-legged friends can enjoy the fresh air as much as you do. Our dog friendly holiday cottage offers many wonderful options nearby for dog walks and days out.
The South West Coast Path
The South West Coast Path is a true highlight for dog owners, offering some of the most spectacular scenery in the region. The section around Kingsbridge and Salcombe is particularly rewarding, with cliff-top views, hidden coves, and plenty of open space for long walks. Many stretches are dotted with dog-friendly pubs, making it easy to pause for refreshments along the way.
Slapton Sands and Slapton Ley
Just a short drive from Kingfisher Cottage, Slapton Sands is one of the area’s most popular dog-friendly beaches. Stretching for two miles, it provides plenty of space for dogs to run and play. Behind the beach, Slapton Ley Nature Reserve adds another layer of interest, with trails around the largest freshwater lake in the South West and opportunities to spot wildlife.
Bantham Beach
Bantham Beach is another year-round dog-friendly favourite. With wide sands, shallow water, and breathtaking views across to Burgh Island, it’s a brilliant spot for both dogs and children. The estuary here is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, making walks particularly scenic.
East Portlemouth
For those seeking something quieter, East Portlemouth offers a series of small, sheltered beaches including Fisherman’s Cove, Smalls Cove, and Mill Bay. At low tide, the rock pools and shallow water provide endless fun for children and dogs alike. With a safe bathing status, it’s reassuring for families who want to let little ones – furry or otherwise – enjoy the water.
Inland Walks Around Kingsbridge
While the coastline is the star attraction, the countryside around Kingsbridge also offers excellent walking routes. From gentle circular paths through farmland to longer hikes across the South Hams, there are walks to suit every energy level. Many start directly from the cottage, meaning you don’t always need to jump in the car to give your dog a good run.
Dog-Friendly Attractions
Beyond beaches and walks, several wonderful places within easy reach welcome dogs. Many National Trust properties in the area allow dogs on their grounds, including Overbeck’s gardens near Salcombe and Coleton Fishacre further along the coast. A stroll along the Salcombe–Kingsbridge Estuary is another rewarding option, with waterside views and plenty of spots to pause.
Refreshments Along the Way
South Devon is blessed with welcoming pubs and cafés, many of which are happy to accommodate dogs. Local favourites include the Tradesman’s Arms in Stokenham, a 14th-century thatched pub, and the Cricket Inn at Beesands, which combines hearty food with stunning sea views. The Crabshell Inn in Kingsbridge is another popular stop, sitting right on the quayside and welcoming families and pets alike. See more dog-friendly places to eat here.
A Dog-Friendly Stay at Kingfisher Cottage
At Kingfisher Cottage, we’re pleased to welcome dogs by prior arrangement. With a private gated terrace, easy access to countryside paths, and several dog-friendly beaches within ten minutes’ drive, it’s a convenient base for holidays with pets. We simply ask that dogs are house-trained, kept on a lead in shared garden areas, and not left alone in the cottage.
With its mix of coastal paths, sandy beaches, and welcoming pubs, the Kingsbridge area is ideal for dog-friendly holidays. Staying at Kingfisher Cottage puts you right at the heart of South Devon’s walking country, giving both you and your dog plenty to enjoy on your next staycation.
