Kingfisher Cottage has been welcoming families to South Devon for many years, and we’ve designed the cottage to be practical, comfortable, and full of the little touches that make a stay with children that bit easier. Converted from an 18th-century stone barn, Kingfisher Cottage is spacious enough to give everyone their own corner while still feeling homely.

Self-catering holidays are so much easier with a kitchen that’s properly equipped. At Kingfisher Cottage you’ll find a high-spec space with quartz worktops, a large island, and everything you need to cook family meals: NEFF hob, oven, microwave, dishwasher, washing machine, tumble dryer, and a full-sized fridge freezer. Whether it’s a big breakfast before a day at the beach or a simple supper after a long walk, you’ll find it practical and welcoming.

The sitting room is often where families come together. Ours has plenty of seating, a log burner for cosy evenings, and a 48-inch smart TV with Netflix, DVDs, and a shelf full of books, puzzles, and board games. Rainy days never feel wasted when you’ve got activities to hand.

With three bedrooms, the cottage sleeps six to seven plus a cot. The master bedroom includes a king-size bed, a single bed, and its own ensuite, while two twin rooms share a family bathroom. Original beamed ceilings and thoughtful design create a bright, airy feel throughout.

Outdoor Space to run and play…

The private, gated terrace overlooks a spring-fed duck pond and the shared gardens. There’s a picnic table and a Weber barbecue, perfect for al fresco dining, while the children can watch the ducks and moorhens. We know outdoor space matters for families, so the spacious terrace gives peace of mind that little ones can play safely while adults relax.

We’ve tried to think of the details that make traveling with children simpler. Stair gates, highchairs, travel cots, and a selection of toys are provided at no extra cost – just remember to bring your own cot linen. With free parking for three cars and fast Starlink Wi-Fi, the cottage is set up for modern family life.

Close to South Devon’s Best Beaches

Being only a 10-minute drive from some of South Devon’s finest beaches is one of our biggest advantages for families. Slapton Sands, Blackpool Sands, Mill Bay, and Torcross all offer safe swimming, space to run and play, and facilities for a full day out. Bantham Beach and Bigbury Bay, a little further, are family favourites for paddling, surfing, and exploring rock pools.

Things to Do with Kids Nearby

South Devon is full of family-friendly attractions. Slapton Ley Nature Reserve is just minutes away, with trails around the largest freshwater lake in the south west. Woodlands Leisure Park in Totnes offers indoor and outdoor rides, while Pennywell Farm is perfect for hands-on animal encounters. Paignton Zoo, the South Devon Railway, and Totnes Rare Breeds Farm are all within easy reach.

Historic market towns like Kingsbridge and Dartmouth offer a different kind of day out, with child-friendly cafés, boat trips, and shops to explore. And for a mix of history and adventure, families often enjoy visits to National Trust properties such as Overbeck’s and Greenway, or even Exeter Cathedral for a touch of grandeur.
