- Slapton Ley National Nature Reserve
Slapton Ley Centre is a 200 hectare National Nature Reserve. Owned by the Whitley Wildlife Trust and managed by the Centre, the Ley is the largest freshwater lake in the south west and is extensively used in the courses at Slapton. The surrounding coastline and nearby Dartmoor National Park provides unrivalled opportunities for field courses.

- The National Aquarium
The National Marine Aquarium was the first aquarium in the United Kingdom to be set up solely for the purpose of education, conservation and research. It remains Britain's foremost aquarium and in the six years it has been open it has attracted over two million visitors.

Nearby National Trust properties include: Compton Castle, Coleton Fishacre, Castle Drogo and famous beauty spots such as Dartmoor National Park and the River Dart.
- Torcross & Slapton Sands
The village of Torcross is the nearest beach to Kingfisher Cottage nestles between the beach and the fresh water lake (Ley) naturereserve. The village is at the western end of Slapton Sands (a shingle beach)in the centre of Start Bay. From the top of the hills above the village there are wonderful along the "sands" and
Ley. The village has an active artist colony and a choice of restaurants, cafes and pubs offering excellent food and drink.
- Totnes Rare Breeds
The Totnes rare breeds centre has holdings of rare breeds of sheep and goats and these are supplemented with a selection of owls, poultry, ducks, doves and domesticated animals. There hope is to increase the awareness of the importance of maintaining rare breeds and biodiversity.
